Illinois Day Trips Book for Family Fun Outings

I recently picked up a copy of the book, Fun with the Family Illinois: Hundreds of Ideas for Day Trips with the Kids by Lori Meek Schuldt. The book was left on a coffee table at a friend’s house and I couldn’t put it down.

The book’s contents are geographically-based; each chapter of the book is dedicated to a different region of Illinois.  Some of attraction-types detailed in the book include:  Swimming, Historic Sites, Food, Museums, Sports, Performing Arts, Parks, Animal Viewing, and much more…  Some of the attractions are perfect indoor activities for rainy days, and others are fun outdoor activities for kids.

Many of the attractions are located within DuPage County and the Chicagoland area.  Some of the attractions would require a day trip or weekend getaway due to distance, especially those located in Southern Illinois.  All of the attractions are geared for families with children between the ages of 2 and 12.  It’s pretty obvious that some of the attractions are better suited to a particular age-group.

The author provides some useful insights, opinions, and tips into many of the attractions that Illinois has to offer.  Some of the travel guides I have read in the past are written in a boring, just-the-facts manner.  This is not one of those guides.  Meek-Schuldt writes in a lively, friendly tone.  When reading this book, it feels as if you are getting the inside-scoop from a friend, not being force-fed facts.

We have gone on two weekend outings using the information from this book and had excellent times.  Now, my kids are looking at the book to find our next adventure.  If you have kids and are interested in all that our fine state has to offer, I recommend this book. I should also mention that Amazon offers a Kindle version of the book (I would have gone this route, but it is nice to have a copy the kids can thumb-through).
