Could it be that preparations to widen Butterfield Road (Rt. 56) have begun? I live in the Wheaton-Warrenville area and have noticed quite a bit of activity on the south side of Butterfield Road near the DuPage River bridge just east of Warrenville. Huge black pipes are being connected along the roadway. Are these new sewer mains? Could IDOT (Illinois Department of Transportation) actually be moving forward with long-standing plans to widen Butterfield Road from Naperville Road west to Route 59?
For more than 10-years, there has been buzz about widening Butterfield Road through this area from its current 2-lanes to a 4-lane highway with some divided medians. This project is at least 5-years overdue… With all the expansion that has taken place (both residential and commercial) near Butterfield and Kirk Roads west of Warrenville, traffic on Butterfield has increased exponentially.
Morning and afternoon rush-hour traffic regularly backs up for over a half-mile as you approach the Butterfield Road / Winfield Road intersection. On average, you have to wait for about six red-light cycles just to get through the intersection when heading westbound towards Warrenville. Usually, the morning-rush isn’t as bad, but it does get worse when schools are in session. A four-lane highway would alleviate most of this congestion.
I’ll do some more digging for information on this, and hopefully IDOT will too… More information to come…
